Email settings

Postby gregoire » Fri Jan 22, 2010 5:52 pm

A suggestion.
The email settings of Yahoo, Gmail and MSN never change so I'd like to see these added/filled in (in the background) by only using my email adress and password. I ask this because the process of doing it yourself is not fool and idiot proof. SSL for instance can be quite confusing.

Hello,

It might be possible to use the work done by the Thunderbird team on v3. Basically once the email address is entered, Thunderbird tries to fetch an XML file from the domain website, or if not found from the thunderbird website containing configuration for this domain.

For yahoo here's what's returned :
https://live.mozillamessaging.com/autoconfig/yahoo.com

More information (should be up to date) here :

Here's a link where you can find settings, pop and imap, for the more popular internet email providers.

http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/accountsettings.htm

Maybe you could use a regular expression to check the email provider after the @ in the email adress (after submit). Then it fills in the settings automatically.
